The second steam locomotive on the BCL&RR is used on the step graded lines on the logging branches. It's a class A Shay with T-boiler.

Shay's were used on many logging railroads all over the world and are the best known logging locomotive. The loco is equipped with trucks to negotiate sharp curves and bad tracks. To bring the power from the cylinders to the wheel sets, a drive shaft with universal joints are used on the engineer side of the loco. On each wheel set, the power is submitted by bevel gears with a reduction from 2:1 or more. These gives more power to the loco and make it easy to handle heavy loads. But they are slow movers.

My own Shay will be one of the smaller types, a 13 ton two truck, known as class A. The loco will be powered by live steam. I'll report the progress on this webpage.
